Having a Vision with Richard Pears

In this second instalment of our exciting series documenting the transformation of ‘Orinoco,’ Richard explains how collating the client’s brief, aims and aspirations for the project, with design ideas, and a forensic understanding of the existing building, is a pivotal first step when embarking on any project.

This groundwork is vital in building a vision and will set the stage for Richard to develop a design response that takes the project forward.

The aspirational open plan kitchen/dining layout and creating a seamless flow from this into the traditional living spaces in the original home were cornerstones of the project. A clear understanding of the existing structural arrangement was essential in achieving this.

From this Richard crafted a layout that skilfully connected the new kitchen space to the dining & living spaces in the remodelled ground floor plan through an open-plan layout that preserves the unique character of the property, ensuring a harmonious blend of form and function, and incorporating the modern fixtures and fittings sought-after by the client.

A crucial part of the brief was to ensure the extension related to the style of the existing house; while being legible as of its time. The clients were keen to include large areas of glazing to break down the threshold to the garden, exploit the first-floor views, and create modern bright spaces.

While contrary to the style of the original property with its small portrait windows and ample wall mass, Richard offered a bespoke and contextual highly glazed solution that was derived from the forms and materiality of the existing property, such that the extension maintains and enhances the property’s unique character.

Partner, Marc Leslie, shares his thoughts on being inspired at property viewings: ‘Personally conducting accompanied viewings at properties allows us to share some ideas and insight with prospective buyers as to how they might adapt or improve the property to suit their needs, perhaps referencing other local examples of extensions or developments which could inspire a purchase.’
